Iván Marcano Sierra was born in Santander, Spain, on the 23rd of June 1992, and did his training at the biggest local club, Racing Santander. His debut for the main squad was in September 2007, but season 2008/09 was when he grabbed his spot in the Spanish League. He moved on to Villarreal CF by the end of that season, and was later loaned to Getafe (2010/11), and Olympiacos, from Greece (2011/12). Hired by the Russian team Rubin Kazan in July 2012, he went back to Olympiacos on a loan for the second half of season 2013/14, where he became one of the pillars supporting the Greek team’s defence. A newcomer at FC Porto in season 2014/15, the Spanish defender signed a contract for the next four seasons.

Marcano arrived late at the squad on his debut season, which delayed his match fitness. The debut match came in a bizarre FC Porto – Boavista (0-0), played under a heavy storm, on a slippery pitch, which ended up making him play alone in the centre of the defence, as Maicon was sent-off. His steel nerves and easy control of the ball were quick to be noticed. Those two features became even more obvious after he grabbed a spot in the starting team, in the second half of the 2014/15 season. In 2016/17, chairman Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa stated he feels the partnership he has with Felipe in the centre of the defence is “one of the best ever” at the club, being in fact the basis to one of the most solid defence in Europe that season.
