Areia assures ambition to beat “a giant of German handball”

Dragons face Füchse Berlin at home on Saturday (18h30), for the first leg of the 3rd round of the EHF Cup

On a streak of 10 consecutive victories (eight for the championship and two for the previous EHF Cup round), the FC Porto handball team faces Füchse Berlin, from Germany, at home, on Saturday (18h30, Porto Canal), for the first leg of the 3rd round of the EHF Cup.

Füchse, vice-champion in this competition and current leader of the German championship, is, according to António Areia, “a giant of German handball”, but that is no reason for the blue and white forward to disregard the chances at qualification for the Dragons: “Without fear, we respect the opponent and look at them as equals”, he stated.

The high level of the round
“Surely this will be a very difficult match and round. Far more than the ones we've faced so far. Speaking on behalf of the team, I have to say that we have the ambition to win the match at home. We are know the team that we’re facing, a giant of German handball, currently first in the league, but this cannot scare us, and we have to go the match eager to win.”

The preparation for this match
“I think the preparation is the same as we always do. We know we will face a very difficult team, but we must, as always, be focused on our work. We have to look at this as a very motivating match, because it’s not every day that you face such a team. And then, an athlete playing for FC Porto at the highest level, always has to be prepared for challenges such as these, facing it head on.”

Opponent without weaknesses
“I wouldn’t say we found weak spots. At this level, that’s difficult. Obviously, we have to know how to find some of their not so good points and try to make them our strongest points. Without fear, we respect the opponent and we want to look at them as equals.”
