Herrera: “We deeply believe we can qualify”

Captain warned the team has to “give everything” and “set their game” to beat Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League

Héctor Herrera believes FC Porto has a real chance of eliminating Liverpool in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, despite being aware of the difficulties that await them. In an interview to UEFA, the captain of the blue and whites warned that the team will have to do their best “in the first and second legs”, set their game and know when and where to hurt the opponent. That’s the only way, he explained, to secure a spot in the next stage of the world's most prestigious club competition.

“We believe in our chances of qualifying, even if we are aware that it will be extremely hard. If we don’t look at these matches the tie with the right attitude, we might as well not play. We will have to study our opponents well and find the best way to approach the match”, the Mexican international star stated, assuring that the team is confident and working hard to reach the goals set for this season: “to win the Portuguese League and the Portuguese Cup” and “to go as far as possible in the Champions League”.

Current leader of the Portuguese league and in advantage in the semi-final of the Portuguese Cup, the only Portuguese team in the Champions League is alive and kicking. And the good performance is due mainly to Sérgio Conceição, according to El Zorro: “His work methodology is simple, but effective. I really like his personality, his character. This is very important and was missing in the club. Things are much better with him and this is also due to the character and personality the players have, in terms of fully understanding what the coach asks for and being humble enough to do what he wants us to do”.

The close relationship the coach has with the players and the confidence they place in him is another of Sérgio Conceição's qualities, Herrera adds: “One of the fundamental things players need is trust and when you really feel that trust from a coach, everything goes better. To be honest, from the first contact I had with the coach, I felt he trusted me and that he was honest with me. Even when, at the beginning of the season, I wasn’t playing, our relationship was the same. I think it's very important for a coach to be able to pass the message to their players”.
