FC Porto debuted in the 2017/18 UEFA Youth League this Wednesday with a 5-1 victory at home against Besiktas. The goals were scored by Jorge Teixeira (31m), Paulo Estrela (32m), Madi Queta (65m), Diogo Dalot (70m), and Diogo Queirós (79m), and allowed the Dragons to get the first three points in Group G, which they now lead alongside Monaco, who beat Leipzig 4-1. That means that the next matchday will bring a match of leaders, as the blue and whites play in Monaco on September 26, on the second matchday of the competition.
At Estádio Luís Filipe Menezes, in Olival, the blue and whites took the lead thanks to a strong start that could have given at least two goals in the first 15 minutes. First because Rui Pires wasted a penalty 7 minutes in and then because Madi, with and empty goal, didn’t have the clarity to push the ball in (14m).
The efficiency finally came after 30 minutes, in a fantastic play. 31 minutes in, Madi moved forward through the middle, passed to Paulo Estrela, who assisted Jorge Teixeira for his sixth goal in four official matches this season. One minute later, it was Moreto’s turn to shine, as he passed to Estrela with his heel, and the midfielder finished with his left foot. The 2-0 was done. The good performance in the first-half was only hindered by the misfortune of Diogo Queirós, who scored an own goal in an apparently harmless free-kick.
In the second-half, the blue and white dominance, although more restrained, continued and not even the red card shown to Diogo Leite (74m) reduced the difference between the two teams. Before that, 65 minutes in, Madi Queta scored the third for the blue and whites, followed by Diogo Dalot, from penalty, for the fourth. When the match was already decided, there was still time for Diogo Queirós to correct in unfortunate moment in the first-half, making it 5-1. An undisputed victory for the blue and whites.
At the end of the match, José Semedo, who replaced João Brandão, banned, on the bench, praised the excellent performance of the Dragons and the fairness of the victory. “The team is to be congratulated because of the great performance. The players were able to keep control of the match at all times, even when they wee a man down. We had chances to score more, but it's an undisputable. This is what FC Porto is all about. We respect all opponents, but we have to keep our posture, because that’s what we want for a FC Porto player.”
