Aleksander Spende: “I'm 100 percent with the club”

Slovenian left-back reinforces a specific position weakened by the injury of André Gomes

Aleksander Spende, 24-year-old Slovenian left-back, 1.98 meters tall, will be joining the handball team for the next two years, coming from Maribor Branik. FC Porto thus reinforces a specific position that was lacking after the injury of another newcomer, André Gomes, sustained while playing for the Portuguese Under-19 national team in Georgia. Spende, who re-joins Croatian player Nikola Spelic, also former Maribor and left-back, played for the youth national squads and was a bronze medallist at the 2012 Under-20 European Championships, hosted by Turkey. In the first statement as a Dragon, talking to www.fcporto.pt and Porto Canal, the first liner – who will be wearing the number 66, like his father, a former international – admits he is going through a lot of feelings, but promises to work hard to help the team.

The expectations
“It's my first experience abroad and, as in the first few times, I’m a little scared, happy, so many feelings at the same time. My expectation is to work hard and do my best to help the team be the first in Liga Nacional. I’m 100 percent with the club and I will give everything for it.”

The contact with FC Porto
“It was a surprise. When they told me, I started shaking, it was great news for me that FC Porto was interested in me. At the end of last season, Maribor said that they weren’t going to sell me and I was happy. Then this offer came, and I couldn’t refuse.”

Spelic's help
“I spoke to him once before leaving for Portugal, but I haven’t had the chance to do it again since I arrived, because I was dealing with all the bureaucracy. He told me that the city is beautiful, the team is good, the league is perfect and that he loves being here. He told me that I shouldn’t be afraid to come and take this step in my career. He'll help me.”

His profile
“I'm a tall left-back, I can play defence, shoot, dribble. I need to work in the gym and in the physical preparation to be stronger. I need to eat [laughs]. Yesterday I tasted the traditional dish, francesinha, and it's very good. I don’t think there will be any problems with food.”
