FC Porto beat Mornar Bar (68-55), at Dragão Caixa, this Wednesday, for matchday four of Group C of the FIBA European Cup, thus grabbing their second consecutive victory in the competition and relaunching the fight for the next stage. In the next round, the fifth and penultimate, the blue and whites will play at Dragão Caixa again, against Kataja Basket, from Finland, with the match scheduled for November 15 (Wednesday) at 20h30 (Porto Canal).
Despite the clear misfortune and even lack of focus Mornar Bar showed, FC Porto still played a first period at an excellent level, reaching an advantage of nine points, conceding only seven points to the team from Montenegro (16-7). Mornar Bar was more assertive in the second ten minutes and narrowed the gap on the way to the break, which came with the Dragons in the lead by 28-25.
As in the first-half, FC Porto came in better and quickly reached an advantage of 14 points, but Mornar Bar reacted again and delayed the decision to the fourth and final period (45-39). Despite the fact that the opponent fought bravely, the Dragons didn’t hesitate and went on to win (68-55), which puts them back in the fight for the qualification to the next stage. Sasa Borovnjak (13 points), Will Sheehey (11 points), Will Hanley (10 points) and António Monteiro (9 points and 11 rebounds) were the best players for the blue and whites.
“We never thought of the advantage in direct confrontation and the idea was always to win the match. Fortunately, we gained an advantage in the direct confrontation and we’ll see if that can actually be important. We faced a very powerful team and we were irreprehensible on the defence. It was a match of great demand and intensity. We are training more and we are on a good sequence of victories, but we have to work hard every day to continue to win”, Moncho López stated, at the end of the match, talking to Porto Canal.
