Casillas: “I always intended to renew”

Spanish international star stated he is happy to remain connected to the club and the city

After renewing the contract binding him to FC Porto, Iker Casillas was a man happy to officialise his connection to a club and a city that always welcomed him. The goalkeeper admitted that his will was always to stay in FC Porto and to continue experiencing the life of the club with which he says he fully identifies. After all, as Casillas himself admitted, there are more important things than money and all it took was a short conversation with chairman Pinto da Costa to make it clear. As for his mind, it’s already looking ahead, meaning, winning the second championship in a row.

Intention was always to renew
“I am extremely happy to stay here for one more year. It’s amazing to be linked to a fantastic club and city, both of which welcomed me from day one. There were rumours that I would leave, but I always intended to stay. Fortunately, I was able to do so, and I am happy for it.”

Second championship in mind
“When I got to FC Porto, three years ago, the intention was to win the maximum number of titles possible. My arrival coincided with a less fortunate period for the club, but now that we got this important title, we need to enjoy it. And, at the same time, we need to start thinking of the coming season and the goal is to surpass what we did this year. We have the title in mind, as we have other national competitions, which are also important for a club as prestigious as is FC Porto.”

Identified with the values of the city and the club
“At first, it’s always hard. When you get to a new city and club, it’s always complicated. After a while, as time goes by, you establish a connection to the people of the club and the city. You feel the warmth. I’m happy, I’m eager, and, thinking of everything, there are more important things than money. To have the opportunity of playing in this club makes me happy and those who know me know it.”

In synch with the chairman from day one
“From the first day, the attitude of the chairman towards me has been phenomenal. As soon as this possibility came up, I had no doubts that everything would be solved as soon as we sat for a cup of coffee.”
