FC Porto Fidelidade beat the French team Mérignac, 6-2, this Saturday afternoon in matchday 5 of Group B of the European League in roller hockey, a result that qualified the team led by Guillem Cabestany to the quarter-finals of the competition, as the Italian team Bassano was defeated by FC Barcelona (3-2) in the other match of the group.
Just as in the first round, the blue and whites started on top and managed to reach an early advantage. In the match at Dragão Caixa, the first goal was scored on minute three, but, in the pavilion of Mérignac, the first goal was scored right on minute two, with Vítor Hugo finishing a play led by Hélder Nunes.
The Dragons moved ahead on the scoreboard, but, despite dominating the match, the seventh team in the French league table aimed, whenever possible, on the counterattack to threaten the blue and white goal. Although Ton Baliu and Rafa came close to 2-0, it was Mérignac to reach the goal and tie the match with six minutes to play in the first-half: Remi Herman was the scorer.
In the second-half, the Dragons increased the aggression and intensity and made use of the superiority of their players, while also improving efficiency, as seen in the five goals scored. On the second minute of the second-half, Hélder Nunes, from a direct free-hit, made it 2-1, a lead that was increased with the goals scored by Gonçalo Alves (33m) and Telmo Pinto (37m).
With the match under control, the Dragons scored two more goals in the last five minutes. Ton Baliu made it 5-1, and Rafa to close the scoreboard for the team. The final 6-2 came in the last minute, with the free-hit given for the 15th foul for the blues and whites.
The Dragons return to competition next Saturday to face Óquei de Barcelos, in matchday 14 of the national championship, and the last matchday of Group B of the European League will be played at Dragão Caixa, on the 18th, against Bassano.
