Pinto da Costa: “We want to extend the contract with Casillas”

White and blue chairman refuted the news released by a Spanish newspaper stating that he had criticized the goalkeeper

FC Porto has already talked to the agent representing Iker Casillas about the intent of activating the clause that will extend the contract binding the goalkeeper to the club for another year (until 2018). Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, however, denies the rumours that the decision is related to the news released this Wednesday by the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, stating the chairman had criticized the goalkeeper’s performance. The information, Pinto da Costa assured, is false, and is probably related to the “Spanish warfare” concerning the main goalkeeper of the national team.

The white and blue chairman believes it’s “ridiculous” to even think there is a chance that FC Porto is not happy with the work developed by Casillas, especially considering that the club has already told the agent that represents the player on the intention of extending the contract with the goalkeeper for another season, meaning until 2018. “Antero Henrique, now a director of the SAD, and I talked about it and we reached an agreement with the agent that represents the player in order to extend the contract with Casillas for another year, after the next one. Now it’s on him to decide, the deal is done on our end, we told them to sign whenever they want to”, Pinto da Costa explained, adding that the decision “has nothing to do” with the news disclosed this Wednesday.

“That news made me laugh, as it states that I had dinner at the home of a great fan of the club, and a friend of mine, José Manuel de Mello. Problem is I have never even met the gentleman, and, according to what I was told, he passed away a couple of years ago, unfortunately. I never had dinner, or lunch, with the deceased – I actually would like to, with a few, if I could –, which proves this is absurd”, Pinto da Costa explained, talking exclusively to www.fcporto.pt and Porto Canal.

According to the chairman, the “wars” in Spain concerning the goalkeeper of the national team do not concern FC Porto: “If they want to play this or that goalkeeper, leave Casillas alone; if they put the best in the starting team, I’m sure it will be him. It may be an issue for some in Spain, for those responsible for him leaving Real Madrid, that Casillas might be the captain and the starting goalkeeper of the Spanish team, and, who knows, maybe even win another international trophy”.
