North-American players Will Hanley, Marcus Gilbert and Will Sheehey will reinforce the FC Porto basketball squad in 2017/18, signing a one-year contract with the club. According to Moncho López, the athletes bring “versatility” to the team, “given the ability all of them have in playing in different positions”, and also “ambition, as, even though all three of them are very young, they’ve already shown character, commitment, and motivation”.
Hanley is 27 years old and will occupy position 4, being able to act as centre and power forward. He is notable for his rebound ability and intensity, and brings extensive experience in European basketball: after his revelation season in LEB Prata, a competition in which he had averages of 17.7 points and 11.2 rebounds, he played in the ACB, the main Spanish league, in the last five seasons, and became European champion of the Basketball Champions League last season, playing for Iberostar Tenerife.
Gilbert, 24, will be one of the small-forwards of the Dragons, being able to easily play positions 2 and 3. He comes from his first international experience, in the ever competitive league A2, from Italy, where he played for two teams in 2016/17, making a name for himself as someone who scores plenty of points (averages of 15 per game) and who gets big shooting percentages, especially from the 3-pointer line (43%).
Sheehey, 25, is a small-forward capable of playing in both outer positions, 2 and 3, but also, if needed, in position 4, given his knowledge of the game and physical potential. He was team captain at the Indiana University, one of the most respected colleges in North-American basketball, and, last season, he was the national champion of the D-League, with the Raptors 905, an affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, from the NBA.
