Victory in Turkey guarantees playoff in the Youth League

FC Porto's Under-19 team beat Besiktas 1-0 on Tuesday, a score that allows the team led by João Brandão to qualify to the playoffs for the Round of 16 of the Youth League. A goal scored by Diogo Leite was enough for the Dragons to reach 12 points, now three more than Monaco (who will face Leipzig at 14h00, mainland Portugal time). The last matchday will be played in Olival against the French team. The objective, which now depends solely and exclusively on the blue and whites, is to stay in the lead of Group G, as it is the only one that guarantees direct qualification to the next round.

At the Yusuf Ziya Onis Stadium, outside Istanbul, the Dragons were the first to show signs of wanting to win the match. Still, the supremacy had few concrete signs next to the opponent’s goal, and Santiago Irala had the best opportunity to open the scoreboard: the Paraguayan failed to head the ball by just a few centimetres. The last part of the first-half had a reaction from the home team, who, with more room to move, saw Diogo Costa (24m) deny the goal to Oğuzhan Akgün, in the best opportunity for the Turkish team in the whole match.

In stoppage time, came the play that decided the match. Paulo Estrela took the free-kick on the midfield line, Diogo Queirós passed to Romário Baró, who hit it with the top bar, but Diogo Leite was in the right place and scored the blue and white victory goal.

The second-half wasn’t as much of a show. The home team tried to score, but failed to beat the good defensive organization shown by the Dragons, which didn’t allow a single clear goal opportunity. On the other hand, in an individual play, Madi Queta came close to the 2-0 (60m), before a stage in which the match moved to a more physical and defensive dimension and, consequently, played at a lower pace.
