Sérgio Conceição: “The League Cup is a title we want to win”

Blue and white coach did the preview of the debut in the competition, against Leixões (Tuesday, 20h15)

A new chapter opens in the season for FC Porto. This Tuesday, starting at 20h15 (with live broadcast on Sport TV1), at Estádio do Dragão, the blue and whites will debut in the League Cup, against Leixões, who plays in the Ledman LigaPro. At the preview of the match, counting for matchday two of group D, Sérgio Conceição acknowledged that they will be facing a confident team, motivated by the latest results, but assured that the Dragons will go in with the same ambition as always.

A competition to win
“We are in this competition with the same goal as all the others: to win. We know it can give us the first title of the season. We’re playing this match as seriously as we can, in the same way we face our daily work. This match will not be any different. We know Leixões has already beaten Paços de Ferreira and that they improved a lot in the league, so they are a confident team, namely in the sense of the aggressiveness that they put in the game. This is a team that is fighting for promotion, and that has interesting match principles. We have to be concentrated, focused and go in to win.”

All matches and all competitions are important
“I look at all matches in the same way. The work is no different, but, obviously, we have to look at the moment the players are in. We have to see the ones that are in the best conditions to choose the best team for this match. We don’t disregard any competition, although the main objective is the Championship. We don’t disregard anything, as the League Cup is a title we want to win.”

Sense of responsibility
“For these matches, there is a great motivation on the other teams when facing the big three, specifically. They play on the edge, sometimes in contrast with some apathy or passivity of the bigger team. I don’t want this, that is not how we work, and that is not our message. I’m sure the players will give an answer according to what it means to represent a club like FC Porto. We cannot, at any moment, lower our levels of concentration and ambition. We have a great responsibility to represent FC Porto and every time we come here, we have to give it all.”
