Casillas: “Victory was essential”

The 3-0 victory in Monaco allowed to regain confidence in the fight for the qualification to the Round of 16

Casillas is the player with the most matches played in UEFA competitions (175) and showed all his experience in his statements after the 3-0 triumph over Monaco for matchday two of Group G of the UEFA Champions League, this Tuesday. The goalkeeper knows the victory was “essential” after the home defeat against Besiktas, but also states that, in such a balanced group, everything can collapse in a single matchday. Next, there are two matches against the German team, Leipzig, and, as for the Portuguese League, the Spanish goalkeeper still didn’t want to talk about the classic match against Sporting (Sunday, 19h15, matchday eight of Liga NOS).

Hope recovered
“We are happy as, after the defeat we had in Estádio do Dragão, which was painful, it was very important to get a good result in Monaco, a victory was essential. It is a very balanced group, where you can have any result in any match. It was important to recover our hope quickly and we knew that it was a difficult opponent, the champion of the French League, with great players and just a few matches lost here.”

The bad game with Besiktas
“That day, we were coming from a number of important matches in the Portuguese League. Maybe it was the music of the Champions League, the atmosphere, we didn’t start well, but we also knew that, in the matches for this group, anything can happen. What seems like a very important victory today can be complicated in the next match, in which we go to Germany. The most important thing is to keep hope and continue to win.”

The goals in the Champions League
“We have to be aware that the most important thing for our team is domestic competition. It's an interesting league, in which we have Benfica, who have been the champions in recent seasons, and Sporting, who is doing well. We are in Champions League with the will and hope to play good matches, as we know that it is the biggest competition in Europe. As a team, we have ambitions and dreams, we know that there are more important and powerful teams, but we are fighting for the place we occupy today.”

The next match
“Now we will enjoy the win and then we will talk about Sporting.”
