More than ten years later, FC Porto is back to Vila das Aves. That’s where, this Saturday, at 20h30, the leader of Liga NOS goes in search of the tenth victory in the tenth official match in history against the local team, to at least keep the distance to the two team immediately behind. “We want to stay ahead and keep the winning streak in the Championship”, Danilo stated, doing the preview of matchday 12.
January 14, 2007, was when the Dragons set foot on the pitch of Estádio do Desportivo das Aves for the last time. They won 2-0, with goals scored by Lucho and Quaresma, and were headed towards the second championship in a row, which would be confirmed on May 20, exactly against the team from Santo Tirso, at Estádio do Dragão, with a 4-1 victory, on the last matchday of the League. It was also the last match for Aves in the main division in years, as they only returned this season, but that was not the last time the two teams faced each other. In the following season, they met again for the third round of the Portuguese Cup, which ended with another blue and white victory, 2-0.
Curiously, the first official match against Desportivo das Aves was for the Portuguese Cup. It came almost 40 years ago, on January 8, 1978, at Campo Bernardino Gomes, in Vila das Aves, and had goals scored by three blue and white “F’s”: Francisco Vital, Francisco González and the inevitable Fernando Gomes. The opponent didn’t score, as happened in seven of the nine times they faced the Dragons - in total, they celebrated only two goals, one at home and one away, against 26 for FC Porto.
Desportivo das Aves is 16th in the league table, with nine points, five of them won as a visitor. That’s when they put on better performance in terms of goals scored and conceded, although they gave quite a fight in the home defeats against Benfica and Sporting de Braga.
The match will be previewed by Porto Canal starting at 19h00, and can be followed live on Facebook, Twitter, and the official FC Porto app. In the end, the analysis of the match will be shown in Porto Canal, and www.fcporto.pt will have the report and statements from the coach and players.
