Overcoming the barrier of the 50

In 110 matches at home against Benfica, FC Porto won 66, or 60 percent

Anticipating a classic without using statistics is difficult, even more so when the two teams that will be facing each other, later this Friday (20h30), are two historical clubs in national football. Between history and stories in more than 100 years of life of FC Porto and Benfica, the present matters more than everything and so does winning matchday 13 of Liga NOS.

Should FC Porto win, as we all want, we turn to statistics to tell you that it would be the 51st, at home, against the rivals from Lisbon. The home advantage has been, in fact, a historically very difficult barrier for Benfica, as FC Porto won 60 percent of their home matches for the league. There are 83 matches in total, with 50 wins, 20 ties and 13 defeats, with the blue and whites scoring close to two goals per game, on average.

Curiously, if we extend the analysis to matches for all competitions, the percentage of blue and white victories is exactly the same: 60 percent, in this case 66 victories in 110 matches, with the average remaining close to two goals.

The big match of matchday 13, which Sérgio Conceição anticipated as “very important, but not decisive”, will have special programming on Porto Canal, starting at 9h45. It will also be, as usual, followed live in the official FC Porto app, and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. And here, at www.fcporto.pt, we are also in classic mode.
