Sérgio Conceição: “We’re not giving up on anything”

Coach praised the attitude of his team and recalled that the Dragons are fighting to win all competitions

After the victory over Rio Ave (3-0), in the opening matchday of Group D of the League Cup, Sérgio Conceição was a coach pleased with the attitude of his team and with the way his players faced this match, which could determine the future in the competition. The coach recalled that the Dragons are fighting for all competitions and that is how it is going to remain.

Demanding on the attack, demanding on the defence
“When we face a team that chooses to not give up on its identity or its first stage of play, we always opt for high pressure. We try to prevent the opponent from creating plays and from making use of their tactic. And that's what we did. We had to be effective defending and attacking, because we can never dissociate the offensive from the defensive. We knew their quality, and what they did with and without ball possession, and that proved to be decisive. We had the intelligence to know how to hurt them. It could have ended with a historic berating and it's fantastic to realize what the players are asked to do and to see the response they give on the pitch. There are many details that we identify and prepare for that end up being decisive. I think we just lacked a bit of efficiency in the last 30 meters to get and even bigger result.”

Different coaches, different team
“Every coach has his way of working teams. I think Miguel Cardoso doesn’t want to give up of his match principles and there are others who do. It depends on the strategy and what each coach transmits to the players. In one way or another, we have already proven that we have a way to deal with teams like Marítimo, for example, because we also scored three goals. What we can control, we control.”

Danilo being sent-off
“It wasn’t a tackle. The red came because Danilo was frustrated. There was no bad intention. I think referees should be more understanding in these situations.”

All available, all committed
“Soares is available, as are all 24 players. Everyone is involved with this project and that is why we are fighting for all competitions at a very high level. We haven’t won anything yet, that's true, but after these five months of work we have a group in the image of what FC Porto is.”

In the League Cup as in the championship
“We don’t give up on anything. Today was proof of that. We showed willingness to win so we don’t lose this competition. It was a test. We wanted to win to be in the semi-finals. And that’s how we face other competitions.”

Work and commitment as guarantees
“It's not worth promising anything. Just work, seriousness and discipline, with the certainty that we will give everything for the club that we love. And I wish all the blue and white fans to have a Christmas filled with peace and love, because that's what makes us feel closer to everyone.”
