This Saturday, the Dragons lost the final of the competition, 1-0, against Sporting de Braga
This Saturday, FC Porto lost the final of the League Cup, against Sporting de Braga, 1-0. The blue and whites were the team that fought the hardest to win the title, but the goal scored by Ricardo Horta in the last minute made the difference at Estádio Municipal de Braga.
The pace was high from the start, with both teams creating several goal opportunities in the first 45 minutes. Braga was the first team to create danger, with Ricardo Horta having two changes to open the scoreboard. Five minutes in, the winger hit the bar with power, and, 13 minutes in, had Alex Telles stop the ball in the small area as it was going for goal.
Slowly, FC Porto took control of the match and Luis Díaz was the first to aim for goal. Found on the left by Marega, the Colombian shot over (17m). The following 15 minutes had a lot of battles in the midfield and not even Soares’ header scared Sporting de Braga (32m).
Despite having less ball possession, the blue and whites tried to create danger in quick attacks, and, after a play on the left, had the best opportunity in the entire first-half (38m). Otávio crossed, Corona controlled the ball near the goal, but was unable to beat Matheus, with a fantastic save. The ball ended up next to Soares, who hit the bar just a few metres away from the touch line.
The break calmed both teams, who weren’t as daring in the second-half. Still, FC Porto continued to try to score, with Marcano (56m) and Soares (64m) heading the ball, but both attempts went straight at the goalkeeper.
There was something missing and Sérgio Conceição sent in Romário Baró, Matheus Uribe and Wilson Manafá to try to change the match, but Sporting de Braga, with lower lines, stopped all blue and white attacks. Against all odds, Braga hit the bar again, this time in a header from Raúl Silva on minute 90.
The play gave new hope to Sporting de Braga, who ended up scoring in the last opportunity of the match. Ricardo Horta got a spare ball in the area and, with just Diogo Costa in front of him, shot for goal (95m).
