FC Porto lost to Marítimo (2-3), at Estádio do Dragão, for matchday three of Liga NOS
This Saturday, FC Porto lost to Marítimo (2-3), at Estádio do Dragão, for matchday three of the championship. After two victories in the first two matches, this was the first defeat for the national champions in the competition.
As expected, FC Porto had a strong and dominant start, with ball possession, but faced an opponent well-organized in front of Amir. 12 minutes, Correa scored, but the Argentinian midfielder was offside and the play was rightfully disallowed by the refereeing team. After Pepe missed the target by mere centimetres following a free-kick taken by Sérgio Oliveira (14m), Cláudio Winck passed to Rodrigo Pinho, the Brazilian forward dribbled Mbemba and made it count, giving the advantage to the visitors (24m). Losing, FC Porto increased the pace even more, and Tecatito Corona watched as Amir denied him of the tying goal (38m), as did Wilson Manafá (41m).
The blue and white persistence was rewarded before the break: Alex Telles took the corner-kick and Pepe went up for the 1-1, becoming the oldest player in the history of FC Porto to score as a Dragon (42m). The second-half didn’t start well for the national champions, as Rodrigo Pinho scored again, following a shot from Getterson that hit the bar (52m). With a goal coming from nowhere, Marítimo was again in the lead. Again forced to recover from the disadvantage, FC Porto did everything to score a second goal and was close to getting it: Corona hit the bar and Sérgio Oliveira was close by for the spare, but a defender prevented the ball from going in fully (70m).
The final stage of the match had an overwhelming pressure from the blue and whites, but Marítimo had the man of the match in front of goal. Amir denied the goal to Marega (83m) and Otávio (85m) and did the same to Alex Telles: after Marega was tackled in the area, the left fullback took the responsibility on the penalty, but failed to fool the Iranian goalkeeper (88m). And, even worse, not only did FC Porto not make it 2-2, the team also took another blow when Nanú made it 3-1 in a quick counterattack (90m+4). Otávio made it 2-3 (90+9m) and Zé Luís almost tied the match in a bicycle kick (90m+10), but the match ended with the victory for Marítimo. It was one of those nights.
