Down to ten men, FC Porto secured three more points after beating Gil Vicente 1-0
FC Porto returned home and to positive results. Three weeks after the last matchday at home, the national champions returned to Estádio do Dragão and secured three well-deserved points against Gil Vicente. The blue and whites went in with many differences and again used a tactic with three players behind the midfield. The only goal of the match came pretty much before the break, and, at the start of the second-half, the Dragons had the chance to score from a penalty, but Denis saved Matheus Uribe’s shot. After the goal, the blue and whites had Zaidu being shown a red card (second yellow) by Hélder Malheiro and were forced to fight even harder to end matchday five with a victory, thanks to Evanilson, who scored his first goal for FC Porto.
Sérgio Conceição innovated and FC Porto went in with a line of three defenders, using Zaidu, Pepe and Mbemba, with a never before seen trio of central defenders. With Tecatito Corona handling the right wing, Manafá on the left, and a trio of midfielders consisting of Uribe - furthest behind - and Fábio Vieira and Nakajima. Gil Vicente was the first team to pose danger, in a shot that ended in the hands of Marchesín, with the Dragons replying from a set piece. In a corner-kick taken on the left, Nakajima made the best from the wind blowing from the South to scare Denis. The first 25 minutes didn’t have much action, and, after the home wingers switched sides, the visitors made the best from a bad pass from Manafá, on the right, and created a four on two situation that could have been embarrassing. The shot, despite going over the bar, woke up the Dragons, as Gil Vicente didn’t created more danger and the last quarter hour was the best for FC Porto in the first-half. In a number of attacks started on the left, Toni Martínez headed straight at the keeper, and then Manafá had a low shot that was deflected into a corner-kick, taken by Fábio Vieira, with Evanilson heading to the far past, but hitting the top bar. Shortly after that, after a good combination between Zaidu and Nakajima, the Japanese star crossed and Evanilson only had to push the ball in. The first goal of the new number 30, recently signed from Fluminense, gave the minimum lead to FC Porto before the break.
For the second-half, Romário Baró replaced Toni Martínez and the young Portuguese was the man under the spotlight in the first noteworthy play in the second-half: Baró shot with power and Ygor Nogueira’s elbow prevented the ball from going to the goal. Hélder Malheiro aimed at the penalty spot, but Denis saved the shot from Matheus Uribe. The best period for the Dragons in the match started after that, with a number of opportunities coming from Evanilson, who hit the bar again, and from the duo Fábio Vieira/Nakajima, who had their good initiatives cleared by the defence. The good moment, however, quieted down after the incredible red card show to Zaidu, sent-off in a questionable decision from the referee. Until the end, Taremi replaced Evanilson, Sarr went in to take over from Nakajima and Sérgio Oliveira replaced Fábio Vieira. Shortly after going in, the Portuguese international midfielder was viciously tackled by João Afonso, but Hélder Malheiro settled on a yellow card. In stoppage time, Marega replaced Corona and the final whistle confirmed the victory for the national champions.
