Sérgio Conceição was pleased with the match, with FC Porto winning 2-0 in Tondela, for matchday 26 of Liga NOS
FC Porto got three more points in the away match at Estádio João Cardoso, in Tondela, in a 2-0 victory, for matchday 26 of the championship. After the final whistle, Sérgio Conceição praised the way the Dragons always remained “in control of the match”, and regretted the wasted opportunities, which would have meant a victory by bigger numbers. From now on, the coach assured, the team will be fully focused on the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League, against Chelsea (Tuesday, 20h00), again in Seville.
The resume of the match
“You have to hold on to the ball, but with purpose. In terms of starting plays, we wanted to lure the opponent and take advantage of any space they opened up behind the midfielders and defenders, using our fullbacks to create danger. We did well in our middle play and in our wings. We were competent for the whole match. In the second-half, Tondela reacted, but we remained in control and truth is I can’t remember a single opportunity they had, whereas we created more situations to score. It was a good match from us, halfway through a round for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with travelling and natural fatigue. I tried to renew our attack with Toni Martínez and Evanilson, but thinking of this match, not Chelsea. I’m happy with the team as we played a good match, overall.”
Sérgio Oliveira on the bench
“It was risky to start him, but I knew I could send him in for a while, not for long. He had a muscle problem, and he isn’t fully recovered yet, but it was enough to play today. We had to be careful, as Sérgio has been played a lot and we knew it wouldn’t have been good for him to play from the start. We have a strong group, competitive and with quality, which gives me guarantees. We look at every match for the championship as a final and I trust everyone.”
One more match against Chelsea in Seville
“It’s important to look at the strategy of the match and send in the best to start it. I make mistakes as well, but I always aim at giving the best to the team to win matches. We were competent in Seville and the preparation for the second leg against Chelsea starts tonight.”
