Rematch of neighbours, more than seven years later

FC Porto faces Leixões at home this Tuesday, at 20h15, in the debut for this edition of the League Cup

This Tuesday, at 20h15, more than seven years later, FC Porto will once again face neighbours Leixões, for matchday two of Group D, which signals the debut of the Dragons in this edition of the competition. The second matchday, as the first, against Rio Ave, was postponed to December 21.

In spite of the proximity - the stadiums of the two emblems are only about ten kilometres apart - the relegation of the team from Matosinhos to the Second League, in 2010, caused a hiatus in matches against FC Porto, which lasted for more than seven years, more precisely 2810 days. On February 13, 2010, the two teams tied 0-0 at the Estádio do Mar, for matchday 19 of the Portuguese League. Jesualdo Ferreira was the coach.

Curiously, the last match between FC Porto and Leixões at Estádio do Dragão was exactly for the League Cup, on January 5, 2010, which the blue and whites won thanks to a goal scored by Varela on minute 45. And there is still a survivor in the current squad, who went in to replace Diego Valeri, on minute 78: Sérgio Oliveira, who, then aged 17, played his second match for the main team, after his debut against Sertanense, making him the youngest ever to play in an official match for FC Porto.

The match will be previewed by Porto Canal starting at 19h00, and can then be followed live on the FC Porto app, and on the Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts. After the final whistle, the match will be analysed in Porto Canal, and www.fcporto.pt will have the report and statements from the coach and players.

In the preview of the match, which will be refereed by Vasco Santos, from Porto, coach Sérgio Conceição was clear about FC Porto’s goal in this competition: “The League Cup is a title we want to win”.
