The 1.88-metre striker began a prolific career at De Graafschap, moved to FC Twente in 2009 and scored 59 goals and provided 37 assists in three seasons with the club from Enschede, contributing decisively to a league title, a cup and two Dutch Super Cups. After a spell in Germany, where he played for Borussia Mönchengladbach, and another in England, while on loan at Newcastle, he eventually returned home and became an idol among PSV fans. 186 goals and 98 assists, one League Best Player award, two Best Scorer awards, five national titles, one Cup and four more Super Cups won in Eindhoven help explain his status. In between, he also played for Sevilla and FC Barcelona, won a Europa League in Andalusia and made dozens of appearances for the Netherlands national team. After winning the Dutch championship for the sixth time, the experienced striker landed in Porto to play for the blue and whites.
