Matchday five of Liga NOS ended in a 0-0 tie On the eighth official match in 2016/17, FC Porto was unable to score a goal and left Tondela, this Sunday, with the first tie of the season in Liga NOS (0-0), for matchday five. The Dragons faced an opponent that set up a wall in the midfield, which the blue and whites had issues to overcome – when they did, shots either weren’t efficient or hit goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos, the man of the match. The starting team FC Porto sent in, for the first time ever in Estádio João Cardoso, had five changes in comparison to the one that faced Copenhagen, on the debut of the UEFA Champions League. Nuno Espírito Santo changed every section of the team: the defence had the debut of French central defender Boly, the last signing from the summer transfer window; the midfield had Rúben Neves, Herrera and Brahimi; and the attack had Depoitre, again teaming up with André Silva. This meant the return to a 4-4-2 formation, with some changes in comparison to the one used against Vitória de Guimarães, at Estádio do Dragão, for the previous matchday. The attack consisted mostly of positional changes between André Silva, Brahimi and Otávio, with Depoitre remaining closer to goal; when it came to defending, the Algerian and the Brazilian players took to the wing, aiming at recovering the ball as quickly as possible, in the few moments Tondela was able to go at the goal defended by Casillas. The home team defended with every player behind the ball, aiming at quick transitions to the attack, especially from the wings, but that rarely posed any real danger – the exception in the first-half was a shot just outside the box, from Claude Gonçalves, that just missed the target (45m). With little room to move, and trying to dodge an exaggerated defensive aggression, allowed by referee Hugo Miguel, FC Porto had difficulties in reaching the opposing area, so the team tried to find both strikers in the back of the defence. That rarely happened in the first-half, though, and the best situation came six minutes in, when André Silva came alone in front of the keeper, but Cláudio Ramos was faster on the ball and was then able to stop the spare shot from Depoitre. From the bench, Nuno tried to change the match: the coach sent in Óliver before the first quarter hour of the second-half, and then Adrián, aiming at offering more mobility to the attack, replacing Depoitre, who, minutes before, was unable to score from a good cross from Layún, in the first dangerous attack for the Dragons after the break (60m). The blue and whites still had difficulties in breaching the wall, and Tondela remained far from Casillas – who stopped Murillo from scoring, on the only occasion for the home team (76m). On the other side of the pitch, Cláudio Ramos was also making a name for himself, as he saved the shot from André Silva, after a fantastic pass from Óliver (82m). The Portuguese striker had a bad night, as, on the following minute, he was again unable to beat the opposing goalkeeper from good position. By then, FC Porto was trying to push Tondela back, unsuccessfully. And the last goal situation for the Dragons came with Adrián, in the final minutes of the match, but the home goalkeeper again saved it, and became the man of the match, as he allowed Tondela to get a precious point in the fight against relegation.
