Portuguese midfielder extended his link to the blue and white club

Sérgio Oliveira renewed his contract linking him to FC Porto until June 30, 2021. This means the 26 years old midfielder extended his link to the blue and white club.

Born in Paços de Brandão, on June 2, 1992, Sérgio Oliveira arrived at FC Porto in 2002 and did his debut with the blue and white shirt on October 17, 2009, against Sertanense (4-0), for the Portuguese Cup, when he was only 17 years old.

After a number of loans and the definite move to Paços de Ferreira, the midfielder returned to FC Porto in 2015, being loaned to Nantes in the second half of season 2016/17, finally winning his space in the squad last season.

Sérgio Oliveira played 56 matches and scored 7 goals for the main team of FC Porto so far. Last Thursday, he debuted in the national squad.

Moment of joy and responsibility
“I am proud to extend my contract with the club in my heart, the club that made me the player and the person I am today. I will try to return it in the best possible way. It’s a moment of joy, as you see your work being acknowledged, but the responsibility also increased. From now on, I’m on a different step. As a player, people look at you completely differently, and it might just be the moment when you have to work even harder and not take anything for granted, as the responsibility is bigger.”

Return it in the best possible way
“In football, not everyone can follow a straight line. My path had some downs, and I had to grow as a person and learn to have some rules as a professional. Fortunately, I had people around me that advised me in the best possible way all this time. It’s a reason to be proud that I’m 26 and know for my humility and work, that I’m recognised by the club. This extension is something to be proud of, but now comes the responsibility of returning it in the best possible way, by keep working and continue to give titles to these fans and club.”

What changed since the debut in 2009
“A lot, as I was 17 at the same, and zero maturity to handle everything that was happening. It was part of my growth, of my path, but I regret nothing, I am where I wanted to be. It doesn’t matter if it took longer. Maybe I needed that time to shape my behaviour. I am proud of who I am today, of the work I have been doing and I hope to continue to feel proud.”

National squad was a fair reward for the work at FC Porto?
“I don’t know if it was fair or not. I work mainly to play here and to give my best for team every Sunday. But it’s obviously a reason to be pleased that you are recognised by the national coach and to play for your country.”
