Just over seven years later, FC Porto faces Moreirense in the Portuguese Cup again (Thursday, 20h30)
On Sunday, November 21, 2010, Estádio Comendador Joaquim Almeida Freitas was the home of one of the matches of the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup. FC Porto, then coached by André Villas-Boas, was the leader of the league, while Moreirense was playing in the Second League, but the match was far from easy for the blue and whites, actually only being solved on minute 75, when, after a powerful shot from outside the area by Fernando Belluschi hit the top bar, Falcao, El Tigre, was faster than the opponents’ defence and, with his right foot, beat goalkeeper Roberto Tigrão.
The goal meant the qualification to the Round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup that the Dragons ended up winning on May 22 of the following year, in Jamor, with an undisputed victory over Vitória de Guimarães (6-2), after becoming national champion and winner of the Europa League in Dublin, in a dream season.
Just over seven years later, the two teams meet again in Moreira de Cónegos, but this time in a more advanced stage, to fight for a spot in the semi-final. The Dragons reach this stage after deafeating Vitória de Guimarães (6-2), Portimonense (3-2), and Lusitano de Évora (6-0), while Moreirense eliminated Santa Clara (2-2 , 6-5 after penalty shootout), Felgueiras (5-2), and Canelas (3-1).
FC Porto and Moreirense have faced each other this season, for matchday three of Liga NOS, played at Estádio do Dragão, where the blue and whites won 3-0, with a hat-trick by Aboubakar. That was on August 20, 2017, and, as Sérgio Conceição reminded in the press conference that previewed this Thursday's match, “some things have changed” in the next opponent, namely the coach, from Manuel Machado to Sérgio Vieira: “A new coaching team came in, with different ideas from the previous coach. All matches are different and have their own story. This match will have its own story and we will contribute to the end of it.”
The match that closes the quarter finals of the 78th edition of the Portuguese Cup, scheduled for 20h30 (Sport TV) will be previewed one hour earlier by Porto Canal, and can then be followed live on Facebook, Twitter, and the official FC Porto app. In the end, the match analysis will be made in Porto Canal and www.fcporto.pt will have the report and statements of the coach and players.
