FC Porto beat Schalke (3-0), in Olival, and count only on themselves to qualify to the next stage

The Under19 team of FC Porto tied this Tuesday against Galatasaray (3-0), in Olival, for matchday 5 of Group D of the UEFA Youth League. Romário Baró (18m and 37m) and Afonso Sousa (48m) scored the goals for the Dragons, who are now tied with Galatasaray in the lead, with ten points, with both teams facing each other in the last matchday. The Dragons count only on themselves to qualify to the Round of 16 of the competition.

FC Porto started strong, but everything became easier when, 15 minutes in, Smolinski was shown the second yellow card, in a play that could have even been a red card. Missing one man, Schalke was unable to counter the blue and white dominance and watched as Romário Baró put on an intense performance, with two goals (18m and 37m). In the second-half, Afonso Sousa (48m) set the final 3-0 that ended the match.

“It’s not over yet, but it was important to win today. We knew it would be hard and we ended up being lucky that they had a player sent-off. We won 3-0 in Germany, but this result doesn’t show what they can do. We rose to the challenge and won a comfortable and well deserved victory. We are going to the last matchday with ambition to qualify to the next stage. We are going to Turkey to fight for the three points”, coach Mário Silva stated, after the end of the match, talking to Porto Canal.

For matchday 6 of Group D of the UEFA Youth League, FC Porto will be travelling to Turkey, to face Galatasaray. The match is scheduled for December 11 (Tuesday), at 11h00.
