Basketball 🏀 Welcome, Jhonathan Dunn 💙

On the return home, the blue and whites beat Belenenses 5-0 and showed why the team is alone in the lead of the championship, with four matchdays to go

FC Porto returned to Estádio do Dragão and the scoreboard showed an even bigger superiority than in the previous matchday, on the derby at Porto, on June 23. Against Belenenses, the Dragons made the best use of the tremendous support received during the trip to the stadium, and didn’t hide behind the guaranteed lead in the table, which was a given regardless of the outcome of match. The match was the last one of matchday 30 of Liga NOS, and the 5-0 achieved makes the team led by Sérgio Conceição the best attack in the competition, along with the best defence, six goals ahead of the second team.

Facing yet another line of five defenders, FC Porto took some time to find its pace, and needed 10 minutes to put Koffi - the only goalkeeper Petit called to the match - to the test. In the following minutes, Belenenses reached the goal defended by Marchesín on several occasions and Sérgio Conceição immediately told Vítor Ferreira, Luis Díaz and Aboubakar to warmup. The starting team noticed that and, from there and until the end of the first-half, the match became a one way street. Mostly on the right, the Dragons assaulted the opponent’s goal and, 30 minutes, Soares was cool enough to make the best of a long pass from Otávio. Five minutes later, Uribe scored his first goal with the blue and white shirt, after receiving a pass from Marega and dribbling an opponent, but referee Rui Oliveira and VAR Manuel Oliveira looked into the play and, perhaps with footage that no one else may have seen, saw that the ball hit the Colombian’s arm before the goal. The second goal for FC Porto was disallowed and the only noteworthy play before the break was a powerful shot for the Dragons. Sérgio Oliveira made the ball go just outside the post in a strong, low shot.

After the break, FC Porto returned stronger, and Belenenses was no longer allowed to reach the goal as often. Twelve minutes n, with the outside of his right foot, Corona placed the ball n the back of the defence, and Marega did what he does best. For a third time, the Dragons scored, even if only two counted. The great start of the second-half for the blue and whites continued in a number of good plays, creating havoc in the opposing defence. In the last 30 minutes, Sérgio Conceição send in Luis Díaz, replacing Corona - the Mexican would be banned for the next match if he was shown a yellow card -, and the Colombian winger only needed 3 minutes to break the opposing defence and to be tackled in the area. From the penalty spot, Alex Telles fooled Koffi and the scoreboard continued to increase. The big numbers were confirmed 82 minutes in, when Fábio Vieira took a superb free-kick, perfect for his left foot, and made the ball go in. With the scoreboard set at 4-0, the leader of the championship assured the advantage of six points over Benfica and improved, even more, the goal average. But the best was still to come: in the last play of the match, Luis Díaz shot a missile that passed several defenders before going in. The sound the ball made when it hit the net was heard in the distance and showed the strength of the shot. Next Thursday, in Tondela, the Dragons will go in with only one objective: getting three more points for the main objective of the season.
