Sérgio Conceição regretted only the many opportunities wasted in the victory over Farense (1-0), at Estádio de São Luís

FC Porto is now alone in the second place of the table after beating Farense (1-0), at Estádio de São Luís, a “historically difficult pitch”, for matchday 15 of the championship. After the match, the blue and white coach praised the performance of the national champions, regretting only the “many goal situations” wasted. “It was a pity that the performance we had wasn’t shown by a different score”, Sérgio Conceição stated, confessing to be “happy for the three points”.

The resume of the match
“It was an extremely well accomplished match for my team. We started on top and gave a strong proof of personality and character. We created a lot of goal situations, and it was a pity the performance we had wasn’t shown by a different score. Farense defended any way they could until the final minutes, when they aimed for the tie, and you know how dangerous a 1-0 score is, but it was one of the best performances we had away from home. Congratulations to the players as they understood what we wanted well. We were able to take advantage of the space where we had it, with fantastic combinations in the last third of the pitch. It’s a shame we didn’t score more goals. I’m happy for the three points in a historically difficult pitch. It’s a pleasure to play here, at the mythical São Luís, where I also had the opportunity to represent FC Porto as a player. It was a victory with an above average performance, it’s just a shame we missed so many goals. We were always closer to making it 2-0 and 3-0 than the opponent was to tying the match. It was an important response after what happened last week.”

Positive cases of Covid-19 in the squad
“We received the good news on the eve of the match, when we heard that we had no new cases of Covid-19 in the squad. When you get to the night before a match, with a certain strategy, and you find out that you won’t be able to use some players, things get complicated, but you have to look at it this way. You have to pay more and more attention and understand that the rules have to be followed so that you can avoid more cases in your squad.”

The situation with Pepe and Loum after the match
“It’s normal in football, when two players of the same team have different opinions. It was simply a moment of disagreement. This is a team with character and personality and the situation shows that. It’s all settled. The leadership is taken by me and things are resolved at our home. It’s not pretty to see, but it’s a situation that was resolved already. I’d rather it didn’t happen, but it’s part of the game.”

The numbers for the championship
“Championships are like marathons and all matches are difficult. We won three important points here, a historically difficult pitch, and we are happy about it. We look at what other teams are doing, of course, but nothing stands in our path and objectives. Away or at home, FC Porto’s responsibility is always to win.”

Transfer window still open
“This is not the time to talk about transfers. This pandemic situation is a problem for everyone and it’s not easy for anyone, but all coaches are on equal grounds in that regard. I have a group that gives me guarantees and we already confirmed, more than once, that the players who go in or those who play less always give a positive response. I’m happy with everyone in the group.”
