Portuguese-Cuban goalkeeper was hospitalized at Hospital de São João

Hospital de São João reported to FC Porto that Alfredo Quintana passed away today, at 12h00. The Portuguese-Cuban goalkeeper of the handball team, aged 32, had been hospitalized on Monday, after a cardiac arrest suffered moments before joining a training session at Dragão Arena.

Born in Havana, Alfredo Eduardo Quintana Bravo became one of the best handball players in the world in his position, during the ten years he played in Europe, after arriving in Porto in 2011, following his good performance in the Pan-American Championship of 2010, in Chile, and for the Cuban national team in the 2009 World Cup, in Croatia. Playing for FC Porto, who awarded him with the Golden Dragon for Top Competition Athlete in 2014, Quintana won six national championships, a Portuguese Cup and two Super Cups, apart from being decisive in the more recent great European campaigns the team had. In the last seven years, after becoming a Portuguese citizen, the goalkeeper also joined the Portuguese national squad and had great performances in the 2020 European Cup and in the 2021 World Cup.

With several individual awards in his résumé, Quintana was also well known for his human qualities, especially the joy he added to all those that met him. The difficult and unexpected loss of the man, even more than the athlete, brings deep sorrow to FC Porto, who wishes to send the deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Alfredo Quintana.
