Classic on matchday 31 of the League, between Benfica and FC Porto, ended in a tie (1-1)
This Thursday, FC Porto tied against Benfica (1-1), at Estádio da Luz, in the classic of matchday 31 of the League. With three matches to play, FC Porto remains in the second place, now with 71 points, four more than the Reds.
The first-half of the classic showed both teams fitting into each other, so, unsurprisingly, there weren’t many dangerous moves in either goal. The first threat belonged to FC Porto, but Mehdi Taremi, receiving the ball from Marega, failed to push it in, pretty much in the small area (20m). On the following play, Benfica scored through Everton, who surprised Marchesín with a placed shot on the edge of the area (23m). From then on, the Dragons took full control of the match and created opportunities to tie the match before the break.
In a play started by Otávio, Mehdi Taremi hit Vertonghen and, in the rebound, Matheus Uribe shot over the bar, right in the middle of the area (34m). Despite the blue and white pressure, referee signalled for the break with the score at 1-0 for Benfica. The second-half started with Marega forcing Helton Leite to a good save to powerful shot from a difficult angle (50m) and, after that, Zaidu, receiving the cross from Sérgio Oliveira’s corner-kick, headed outside the post (51m). On the other side, Diogo Gonçalves fooled Artur Soares Dias in a play with Wilson Manafá in the area, but the VAR was on it. Called to watch the footage, the referee reversed the decision and disallowed the penalty for Benfica (56m).
After Mehdi Taremi headed the ball over the bar in yet another corner-kick taken by Sérgio Oliveira (68m), FC Porto finally got the equalizer: João Mário dribbled Taarabt on the right wing and crossed late to the area, where Matheus Uribe came from behind to shoot for goal, not giving any chances to Helton Leite (75m). In stoppage time, in a quick transition, Taarabt shot from distance and Marchesín deflected the shot into the top bar, with the Argentinean goalkeeper then grabbing it before danger could arrive (90m+1). In the following minute, Pizzi made it 2-1 for Benfica, but the VAR saw Darwin clearly offside at the start of the play and the goal was obviously disallowed (90m+2). FC Porto had more ball possession, more attacks, more shots, and wanted to win more than the opponent, but left Lisbon with only one point.
