FC Porto and Atlético tied 0-0 in the opening of the Champions League

All tied between FC Porto and Atlético in Madrid. In the opening matchday of the UEFA Champions League, the Dragons played at the Metropolitan Stadium and tied 0-0 with the Spanish champions and get the first European point in the 2021/22 edition of the biggest club competition in the world. In an intense match, which was expected, as Sérgio Conceição and Diego Simeone were the men leading the teams, the Dragons were the ones closer to a victory: Otávio hit the post and Mehdi Taremi had a goal disallowed - due to misfortune and to the constant interruptions of referee Ovidiu Hategan, always against the blue and whites - caused shivers in Madrid and left the blue and whites fans mouth-watering.

Sérgio Conceição made three changes in comparison to the team that started in Alvalade last Saturday, sending in Zaidu on the left of the defence, Marko Grujic in the midfield and Toni Martínez in the attack, instead of Marcano, João Mário and Bruno Costa. Five minutes in, Diogo Costa prevented Suarez from scoring, with a save that will be remembered. Fifteen minutes in, the first FC Porto attempt: a corner-kick on the right and the giant Grujic headed over the bar. In a time when both teams seemed to match each other, Luis Díaz found room to move forward, passed to Zaidu and the Nigerian was stopped only by Kondogbia, sliding in inside the area.

On the return for the second-half, Wendell replaced Zaidu and debuted with the FC Porto crest on his chest. Five minutes later, Otávio’s shot flew over the entire opposing defence and was only stopped by the far post. On the spare ball, Mehdi Taremi was unable to get to it for the goal. Shortly after, Pepe was replaced due to physical complaints, gave the captain’s armband to Otávio and Marcano was sent in. In the last 15 minutes of the match, Sérgio Conceição sent in Oliveira and Vitinha to replace the tired Toni Martínez and Matheus Uribe, who had a yellow card, reinforcing the midfield with one more man. The save of the match came almost immediately: the ball got to Correa, who, with his right foot, shot low at the far post. Unafraid of the big stage, Diogo Costa stretched and deflected the ball into a corner-kick. The moment of the night 80 minutes in, when Taremi - just like in the last home match against Juventus - took advantage of a bad pass made by Lodi to open the scoreboard. Oblak raced to the ball and brought down the Iranian striker, but the goal was disallowed for handball. There was a lot of action until the end of the match. After Pepê replaced Luis Díaz, Mbemba was centimetres away from heading a perfectly placed free-kick by Sérgio Oliveira into a goal. The same Mbemba would be sent-off in the last minute of stoppage time, for a foul on Griezmann in a dangerous area, similar to a play that involved Felipe and Otávio, with the referee giving only a yellow card. In the free-kick given, Luis Suárez was not able to make it count, so the tie didn’t give way to unfairness.
