FC Porto beat Monaco, 2-1, in the day the Blue Sea returned to Estádio do Dragão

The blue and white family gathered again at Estádio do Dragão for the first wave of affection to the 2021/22 national champions, who celebrated their return home with another friendly, this time against Monaco. Mehdi Taremi (67m), from the penalty spot, and Galeno (71m) scored the goals for the blue and white team (2-1).

The match had only started four minutes before when Stephen Eustaquio made the first warning, but the Canadian international midfielder didn’t shoot with the intended force. In the next play, Minamino forced Diogo Costa to a good save, later doing the same to a shot from Kevin Volland (24m). In between, Pepe (14m) and Mehdi Taremi (18m) also forced Nubel to work in the opposite goal, but the best opportunity for the Dragons in the first-half belonged to Pepê: the Brazilian winger came up alone in front of the German goalkeeper, but couldn’t break the tie before halftime (37m).

The tie could have been broken shortly after referee Gustavo Correia signalled the start of the second-half, but Evanilson was slightly offside before shooting into the back of the net (49m). FC Porto was far better in the second-half and scored the goal quite naturally: Mehdi Taremi was tackled for a penalty and gave Nubel no chance at saving it (67m). The pace in the attack of the national champions made life difficult for Monaco in the second 45 minutes and the 2-0 came shortly after the 1-0, with Galeno heading out of the reach of the German goalkeeper after Matheus Uribe made the pass (71m). To end a very special day for the blue and white family, highlight goes to the debuts of reinforcements David Carmo and Gabriel Veron playing at Estádio do Dragão and the goal scored by Monaco, with Ben Yedder, from penalty (90m).
