FC Porto beat Boavista 1-0 for matchday 30 of the League
In matchday 200 with Sérgio Conceição as coach, the 30th of 2022/23, FC Porto beat Boavista at home by a single goal and restored the distance to the lead to four points. Forced to win "a very important match", the Dragons proved their favoritism and beat the local rival for the 101st time. Mehdi Taremi took the penalty that gave the victory, Marcano was sent off and left the team outnumbered for almost half an hour.
Diogo Costa, Matheus Uribe, Mehdi Taremi and Evanilson returned to the starting team, but the first player to create danger was one of the starters in Famalicão. Forgetting his size, Otávio jumped above everyone else and narrowly missed the header, setting the tone for what followed. On the first of consecutive set pieces on the right, Uribe deflected Wendell's corner-kick and Cannon, on the goal line, cleared the most dangerous attempt yet.
27 minutes in, a free-kick taken by Taremi in a dangerous zone hit the wall and, on the spare ball, Eustaquio aimed at the top angle, but the shot missed. Completely full, Estádio do Dragão feared the worst when an incomplete save from Diogo Costa made the fans nervous and inspired Boavista, in their best phase of the game when the referee whistled for the break.
Unhappy with what he saw in the first 45 minutes - during which FC Porto failed to have a shot on goal - the blue and white coach did three changes at half time: Manafá, Eustaquio and Evanilson were replaced by Galeno, André Franco and Toni Martínez. All three substitutes did well. Fresh on the pitch, Andre Franco was clearly tackled in the area and Taremi made the penalty count (1-0).
With the tie broken, the hardest was yet to come and that was when Marcano made a mistake in a bad area and ended up having to grab the opposing forward, as he was running alone for goal. The move ended in the central defender being sent-off with a red card. Fábio Cardoso replaced Toni Martínez, with the Dragons reduced to ten men and the black and whites pressing forward. In a few minutes, close to the end, Boavista made three serious attempts - first in a crossed shot, then a shot in front of goal and, finally, the best shot ended in a huge save by Diogo Costa, preventing the goal.
Until referee Rui Costa signalled the end of the match, there was still time for Marko Grujic to replace Taremi and for André Franco to shoot over the bar, receiving the ball passed by Galeno after a swift counter-attack. The focus now shifts to Famalicão and to the Portuguese Cup (Thursday, 20h30).
