Vítor Bruno criticized the performance of referee Miguel Nogueira after the tie against Arouca (1-1)

The match between FC Porto and Arouca, for matchday four of the League, ended in a tie (1-1) and full of controversy. The dissatisfaction of the blue and whites was clear and explained by Vítor Bruno, who stressed that "the game was stopped too often" and that the referee was "too permissive". In the opinion of the blue and white coach, "what happened in the end was the perfect image of all the bad things that have been happening to Portuguese football": "We already had several cases this season in which things did not work well from the City of Football, with decisions, taken on the pitch, 10 to 15 metres away from the action, being reverted by telephone, which does not seem to me to be the way, regardless of whether you judged well or badly. If we want to make our football even more credible, this is not the way."

The coach was also disappointed with the performance of the Dragons, which had "difficulties in understanding how to get to the opposing goal" in the first half given the tactical change Arouca did and explained that "the positioning, when the team had the ball, was too short": "We played a lot from the back, we did not attack spaces, we did not try to mess up their defensive organization. They always felt very comfortable playing up front."

"The final moments are the image of the team: the determination, the fight, the selflessness, the constant belief", said Vítor Bruno, who also mentioned that the penalty kick ended up "shaking the team", which did not fall and "always" tried to reach the victory.

Vítor Bruno
"Something is naturally missing, otherwise we wouldn't have the approach we had in the first half. The opponent again changed their usual tactic, chose to present a different DNA, and, in the first half, we had difficulties in understanding how to get to the opposing goal. We have a habit of saying that positioning has a very high correlation with the final result and today the positioning, when the team had the ball, was too short. We played a lot with our back turned, we didn't attack spaces, we didn't try to mess up their defensive organization. They always felt very comfortable playing up front and the result at half time, despite one or two plays that seems dubious to me – I am clearly referring to the play with Wendell that deserved to have been seen by the video referee because I have the feeling that it came right on top of the line of the area, and then there was no intervention from the VAR – and in the second half we tried to take Arouca's midfield by storm, we did it and we were able to create dangerous plays. Arouca, in a rare approach to our goal, scored the goal, was winning and the final moments are the image of our team: the determination, the fight, the selflessness, the constant belief. We had a penalty kick to tie the game, it ended up shaking the team, but we didn't fall, we kept trying and it turned out to be a result that is what it is. It seems to me that the game has been stopped too many times. If we want to promote our football, this is not the way. The referee was too permissive. I don’t want to dodge responsibilities, but I also don’t want to hush, just because we live in a frail society that won’t let you speak your mind, under the penalty of being banned. I don’t want to disrespect anyone, but I think that what happened in the end was the perfect image of all the bad things that have been happening to Portuguese football. We’ve already had situations that show things aren’t working well at the City of Football, with decisions, taken on the pitch, 10 to 15 metres away from the action, being reverted by telephone, which does not seem to me to be the way, regardless of whether you judged well or badly. If we want to make our football even more credible, this is not the way. Starting the break for national duty, we want to rest. We have 10 points, and we wanted to have 12. Not everything was bad, not everything is well, we have some steps to take, and the players that got here need to settle in and realise tghat FC Porto is a club of great demand, and with a DNA linked to victories, conquests and titles. We will be here, as always, prepared for everything, as that part of what we are as a team."
