FC Porto’s victory in Vizela (2-0) was the 1000th of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa in the championship

1368 games. 1000 wins. This is the history of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa and, at the same time, that of the sport worldwide. The course of triumphs in the championship of the chairman with the most titles in football began on May 2, 1982, just nine days after he took office for the first time. Espinho was the first victim of the Pinto da Costa Era and left Estádio das Antas with a 3-0 defeat. At the same time, neither Benfica (914 wins) nor Sporting (812), the biggest rivals in this period, managed to get close to FC Porto.

Now, in Vizela, on October 29, 2023, the home team was beaten 2-0 in matchday 9 of this edition of the Portuguese League, with goals scored by Mehdi Taremi and Eustáquio. FC Porto remains third in the table with 22 points, as many as Benfica and Sporting (who have one less game).

FC Porto started in Vizela with three changes in the team. Wendell and Galeno were out, injured, so Jorge Sánchez, on his debut for the blue and whites, and Evanilson, who had just scored three goals in Antwerp, started the match. In comparison to the previous match, for the Champions League, André Franco stayed on the bench and Francisco Conceição started on the right wing for the first time in the season. The number 10 was motivated by the opportunity and was the most dangerous Dragon in the first minutes, with constant plays, always supported by the Mexican defender, who seemed to be on point in terms of physical condition.

The Dragons completely dominated the course of events and, 20 minutes in, opened the scoreboard. Sánchez passed from the right and Mehdi Taremi showed his class by passing with his heel to Evanilson, who was faster than Bruno Wilson and ended up tackled by the central defender. Referee Manuel Oliveira signalled the penalty and, facing goalkeeper Buntić, the Iranian striker made it count. The low, hard shot ended in the back of the net (1-0).

Always ready to cause havoc, Conceição was close to scoring eight minutes later. Cutting inside from the right, he led the ball on his left foot and shot hard, but the ball hit the post. Looking to respond to the Dragons' advantage, Vizela got close to Diogo Costa 32 minutes in, and Nuno Moreira also hit the post, so the advantage remained.

With a quality that made the fans' delight, the blue and whites were close to the second 41 minutes in by Evanilson. In response to a long ball, Pepê passed to the Brazilian with a header, but, in good position, the forward allowed Buntić to save it.

It was almost a goal, but Eustáquio wanted to go over the “almost”. Suffering high pressure, the home team had to clear the ball from the danger zone, but Sánchez recovered still in the offensive midfield. Francisco Conceição controlled the ball, gave it to Evanilson, who, in turn, played for the Canadian international. Showing that both his feet are perfectly synchronized, he moved that ball to the left and shot for a superb goal. The ball still hit the post and ended in the farthest upper angle, giving the goalkeeper (43m) no chances. It meant the 2-0 just before the break.

Balanced to stay ahead, the team led by Sérgio Conceição allowed only one dangerous play next to their goal. 62 minutes in, Samu, alone in front of Diogo Costa after David Carmo lost the ball, shot over the top. Pepe, in the other area, was the only one who managed to create danger, but without success. Until the end, the blue and white coach sent in Toni Martínez, André Franco, Fábio Cardoso, Nico González and Gonçalo Borges in the match, but the result didn’t change. 2-0, FC Porto's biggest victory in the championship so far, was the final result and the three points went to Porto.
