FC Porto beat Santa Clara (2-1) and reached the semi-finals, as always happened with Sérgio Conceição

22 days later, FC Porto returned to the Azores with a terrible start, but return home smiling. The Dragons beat Santa Clara, 2-1, with goals scored by Evanilson and Galeno and qualified to the semi-finals of the Portuguese Cup, a usual occurrence since Sérgio Conceição took over the team. Next there is a two-legged round against Vitória de Guimarães, yet to be scheduled.

The new start of the match could not have gone worse for FC Porto, as, five seconds in, the Dragons were losing. The match resumed from a throw in next to the blue and white area and, after an aerial ball on the near post and a shot from Pacheco next to the penalty mark, Rafael Martins took advantage of the rebound to make it 1-0.

Sérgio Conceição immediately changed the team's tactics, bringing Wendell closer to the central defenders, moving João Mário to the left wing and Galeno joining Evanilson, with Pepê behind them. This allowed the Dragons to get closer to the goal even before the break. 30 minutes in, Galeno did a long pass on the right and Fábio Cardoso, on the near post, forced Marcos Díaz to a save into a corner-kick. 41 minutes in, Evanilson received the ball in good position in the area, but the forward’s shot was deflected by a defender. 18 minutes after the resume of the match and on the way to the break, the score seemed grim (1-0).

The second half started with FC Porto again playing in 4-4-2, with Namaso – replacing João Mário – next to Evanilson, and Pepê on the wing. Soon, there was an opportunity for Francisco Conceição who, alone in front of Marcos Díaz, was grabbed by Pacheco, but no red card was shown (46m).

With more people on the attack, the blue and whites came close to scoring 50 minutes in when, after Evanilson recovered the ball, Namaso passed to Galeno, who, in good position, was unable to make it count. The goal, however, wouldn’t take long. Two minutes later, Francisco Conceição recovered on the right wing and gave it to Evanilson; the forward hit a defender in his shot and the deflection rendered the goalkeeper powerless (1-1). This was enough for Evanilson to match his record of goals in a season (21).

Having reached the tie, the Dragons – winners of last season’s cup – kept the pressure and needed only eight minutes to reach the lead. Again wreaking havoc on the right, Francisco Conceição dashed towards the end line, crossed to the heart of the area and, after a bad control from Nico González, Galeno made it count (2-1).

76 minutes in, the Dragons had two situations that kept them on their toes. First, after a cross from the left, Diogo Costa missed the clearance and Wendell ended up saving the goal on the touch line. A few seconds later, following a corner kick on the right, Safira hit the post. The danger faded and the qualification to the semi-finals was confirmed when Iván Jaime and Marko Grujic were already on the pitch (2-1).
