Losing 0-3, a huge Dragon turned the score around and won the 24th Super Cup (4-3)
0-1. 0-2. 0-3. 1-3. 2-3. 3-3. And finally 4-3. Although many feared the worst, the king of the Super Cups went all in for the start of 2024/25 and achieved an absolutely epic turnaround that was worth the 24th Super Cup Cândido de Oliveira.
In Aveiro, stage of the classic against Sporting, FC Porto was losing 3-0, pushed the match to extra time and ended up winning 4-3, reinforcing the status of the most titled Portuguese club: the count is now up to 86 official titles.
Vítor Bruno again sent in ten of the eleven starters in comparison to the presentation match, betting on Galeno instead of Iván Jaime, and Danny Namaso was inches away from opening the scoreboard, when he shot slightly overhead after Kovacevic's bad run.
From then on, it was all for Sporting. In 18 minutes, the team from Lisbon scored three times: first in a corner-kick taken by Pedro Gonçalves that Gonçalo Inácio finished, then in a play between Gyokeres and Pote and, finally, by Quenda, who only had to shoot from a cross well taken by the Swede. Gyokeres missed a header when he was unmarked in the middle. The euphoria was so great that the green and white fans interrupted the match with a firework show.
The saying goes that he who laughs last, laughs best and the inevitable blue and white reaction came soon after, when Galeno took advantage of a mistake made by Sporting’s defence and reduced the disadvantage, leaving the match with only a two-goal lead before the break (1-3).
The same 22 players returned, but only for another quarter of an hour, as the pair Eustáquio/Iván Jaime replaced Marko Grujic/João Mário. Shortly after, Nico González reduced, in a play where the Dragons pushed the rival to the ropes (2-3). Struggling to get out and breathe, Sporting conceded the tie in the following attack, thanks to Galeno, then playing as left fullback, and a lot of insistence from FC Porto (3-3).
And because those in blue and white never lower their arms, Fran Navarro, freshly sent in, was close to scoring 87 minutes in (twice), but the 4-3 was denied to him by the opposing goalkeeper, first, and then by the offside line. In addition to the Spanish forward, who replaced Gonçalo Borges, Vasco Sousa had already replaced Nico.
The city of Aveiro trembled in the 101st minute, thanks to a shot by Iván Jaime that deflected on an opponent and fooled the opposing goalkeeper, confirming a never-before-seen outcome (4-3). Before referee João Pinheiro signalled the end of the match, there was still time for several inconsequential attempts from Sporting, but David Carmo – sent in right after the winning goal –, together with his companions, took care of them. What else is left to say?
