FC Porto had 23 shots against Rio Ave's zero and got three more points (2-0)
FC Porto continues with full victories in the 2024/25 edition of the Portuguese League. Back home, a week after the victory in the Azores and two after the victory against Gil Vicente, the blue and whites beat Rio Ave, 2-0, keeping a perfect record in the championship. Galeno scored the fastest goal in the history of Estádio do Dragão, Nico González scored again and the result could have been bigger.
Vítor Bruno replaced Fran Navarro with Pepê in the team and could hardly have imagined a better start: kick-off, lab play and Galeno's acrobatic shot for goal at 18 seconds - five seconds less than the previous record, owned by Otávio. From then on, it was only FC Porto in the game. Until the break, the Dragons took nine more shots, didn’t allow a single shot and could have reached the break with a tremendous lead.
Play by play. First, Danny Namaso forced Jhonatan to a good save, then Iván Jaime shot into the middle, as did Martim Fernandes. The Spanish midfielder then took a free-kick saved by the goalkeeper, before passing to Nico González for the 2-0, with a shot at the edge of the area that went in near the post and was applauded by his countryman Samu Omorodion. Pepê followed with a header, coach Luís Freire did three substitutions and Patrick William was sent-off with two yellow cards.
Vasco Sousa returned from the rest with renewed strength and shot with power, but outside, before Martim Fernandes offered the goal to Pepê, but the Brazilian midfielder shot at the goalkeeper. The later two were replaced by Wendell and João Mário, with Galeno moving up on the wing, but the fans became impatient with a bad finish in the last quarter of an hour.
From then on, with Marko Grujic and Gonçalo Borges replacing Vasco Sousa and Iván Jaime, the Dragons kept their pace, but Galeno again failed to score – as did Namaso, who wasted an excellent opportunity in the same play. The number 13 was replaced by Fran Navarro, Namaso was again close to scoring in the small area and referee Iancu Vasilica finally ended a one-way game. Saturday will bring a classic in Alvalade.
