FC Porto and Manchester United tied 3-3 in matchday 2 of the Europa League
The 500th official game at Estádio do Dragão had everything, but the most important. Against Manchester United, in the second matchday of the renewed Europa League, FC Porto was losing 2-0, turned the result to 2-3 and allowed the tie in stoppage time (3-3). Rashford opened the scoreboard, Hojlund made it 2-1, Samu scored two, Pepê scored, but Maguire tied in stoppage time.
Vítor Bruno repeated the same team that started in Guimarães, betting on Eustáquio instead of Vasco Sousa, and the two men ahead only needed 90 seconds to reach Onana, who saved the attacks of Samu and Galeno. Five minutes later, at seven, Rashford got the ball next to the visiting bench, reached the area and beat Diogo Costa (0-1).
After João Mário shot over the South goal, and in another play on his favourite wing, Rashford saw Hojlund behind the home defence and offered the Danish forward the 0-2. The second goal froze the stands, but did not affect the morale of a squad that never lowered its arms and reduced the disadvantage soon after, when Onana saved a header by sheer instinct and Pepê appeared on the line to put it in (1-2).
The West wing was where the action was focused on and that was where the tie was born: João Mário crossed, Eustáquio passed to Nico, the Spanish midfielder returned the ball to the fullback and João Mário crossed again, but this time found Samu, who tied the match in a header that made almost 50,000 people jump in excitement (2-2). Until half time, Bruno Fernandes created some danger, but Diogo Costa came out on top in the face-off against Hojlund and the well-known Casemiro.
Rashford did not return for the second half and, with Garnacho on the pitch, Francisco Moura moved up, but shot straight at the goalkeeper when he had everything to score. The third goal did come 50 minutes in, when Nico found Pepê, Pepê passed to Samu and the Spanish forward shot at the top angle of the North goal (3-2). Martim Fernandes replaced Pepê, Samu was close to the hat-trick after a number of high balls and Vítor Bruno did three substitutions, removing Samu, Pepê, and Eustáquio and sending in Marko Grujic, Fábio Vieira and Deniz Gül.
In the final stretch, Bruno Fernandes was sent off with a second yellow, in a dangerous play over Nehuen Pérez. Gül wasted a perfect opportunity in good position and Garnacho forced Diogo Costa to a good save. The goalkeeper, however, could do nothing to prevent Maguire from tying the match in a corner-kick in stoppage time (3-3). Danny Namaso replaced Alan Varela immediately afterwards.
