João Mário talked after the 2-0 defeat to CD Nacional

FC Porto suffered a setback in Choupana with a 2-0 defeat to CD Nacional, remaining in the second place in the league with 40 points – one point behind Sporting and two ahead of Benfica. João Mário admitted that “these were three important points to reach the lead”, but added that “CD Nacional came out aggressively”, and Porto was “never able to get the upper hand”, despite “the team’s determination and desire always being there”. The right fullback stressed that “there are no excuses” for the result and emphasised the need to “keep our heads up, move forward, and work hard every day to reach first place”.

A missed opportunity
“We knew how important this match was, these were three points that could have taken us to the lead, and that’s what we wanted. We didn’t start well, CD Nacional went aggressively, and we couldn’t impose ourselves. They scored, we tried to respond, but they got another goal before half time. In the second half, we pushed forward, the determination and desire from the team were always there, but, unfortunately, we couldn’t turn things around as we wanted. Now we have to move on, there’s a long season ahead, and I’m confident we’ll get there.”

No excuses
“There are no excuses, this match was worth three points, just like all the others, but it was important because we could have reached the lead, but it was worth the same. Now we have to keep our heads up, move forward, and work hard every day as we’ve been doing, improving to reach the lead.”

The race for the title
“There are still many matches ahead, and we’ll do everything to get to the top. The title is our main objective. We’ll approach every match to win, no matter who the opponent is, that’s always our mindset.”
