FC Porto lost away to CD Nacional (2-0) for matchday 17 of the Portuguese League
FC Porto returned from Madeira empty-handed after a 2-0 defeat to CD Nacional. Playing the last 75 minutes of the match, which had started nine days earlier but stopped due to fog, the Dragons failed to overturn the two goals conceded before halftime, which means they end the first turn of the season with 40 points—one point behind Sporting (1st) and two points ahead of Benfica (3rd).
Vítor Bruno sent in Vasco Sousa instead of Alan Varela, who had originally replaced the banned Nico González, but the tie lasted only two minutes: Nacional won possession high up the pitch after the match resumed, Garcia crossed into the goalkeeper box, and Dudu headed the ball in with ease (1-0).
The home team remained the better team for the next half hour, prompting FC Porto’s coach to make two substitutions, sending in João Mário and Danny Namaso for Martim Fernandes and Pepê. Moments later, from a corner-kick on the right, Zé Vítor jumped alone and beat Diogo Costa (2-0).
The second half started with Fábio Vieira and Gonçalo Borges replacing Vasco Sousa and André Franco. The number 10 created Porto’s first two chances, both headers—one by Namaso from a free-kick and another by Samu from a corner. Namaso tried again after Galeno ran on the left wing, Otávio took a powerful long-range shot, and Samu tested the opposing goalkeeper in FC Porto’s best moment.
With Deniz Gül replacing Rodrigo Mora, Porto pressed on, creating a flurry of corner-kicks and scoring opportunities, but the six attacking players lacked accuracy. Gül attempted to lob Lucas França, but the shot went over, and then passed to Samu for another header from the Spanish star that went over the bar. CD Nacional's goalkeeper, Lucas França, saved Gonçalo Borges' shot in the final play of the match, already in stoppage time.
