FC Porto lost 3-1 to Gil Vicente on matchday 18 of the Portuguese League

FC Porto conceded a 3-1 defeat against Gil Vicente for matchday 18 of the championship, returning from Barcelos without any points. Gonçalo Borges scored Porto’s only goal.

Vítor Bruno started João Mário, Francisco Moura, Nico González, Danny Namaso, and Fábio Vieira and the latter created the first dangerous play: Otavio passed forward to Galeno, who then pushed it to Namaso, with the ball ending in the number 10, but the shot, going for goal, was deflected into a corner. The resulting set piece found Samu at the far post, and his header was only stopped on the touch line by Sandro Cruz.

In response, 11 minutes in, Gil Vicente took the lead (1-0). Félix Correia passed to Fujimoto, who, from the left corner of the area, crossed for Pablo’s precise finish. This was followed by a period of offensive pressure from the blue and whites, but they couldn’t trouble goalkeeper Andrew, and the half time break arrived with the home side in the lead.

Gonçalo Borges replaced Galeno at the start of the second half and needed only two minutes to tie (1-1). The tie lasted only five minutes, though, as Josué gave Gil Vicente the lead from a corner (2-1).

Deniz Gül, Rodrigo Mora, and Tiago Djaló went in – replacing Namaso, Fábio Vieira, and João Mário. The blue and whites pressed forward, assaulting Gil Vicente’s defence, but suffered another setback: the direct red card shown to Nico González after a VAR review.

Despite being outnumbered, Porto found the net for a 2-2 through Gonçalo Borges. However, after being called back to the monitor by VAR Gustavo Correia – due to an incident between Otavio and Santi in FC Porto’s area – Fábio Veríssimo disallowed the goal and gave a penalty. This was the second time this season that FC Porto faced such a decision. Félix Correia scored from the penalty to make it 3-1. After the match ended, Samu was also sent off with a direct red card.
