FC Porto lost 1-0 to Olympiacos in matchday 7 of the Europa League
A single goal by El Kaabi (78m) meant FC Porto lost to Olympiacos in matchday 7 of the Europa League. With the same eight points as before, the Dragons are 25th in the table and are one point away from qualifying to the play-offs for the Round of 16 of the competition.
Debuting in charge of the main team, José Tavares sent in Tiago Djaló, Alan Varela, Rodrigo Mora and Pepê from the start and FC Porto took control of the match from the start. Despite the greater offensive volume and the constant approaches to the goal defended by goalkeeper Tzolakis, the first great goal opportunity only came 40 minutes in, when, from a corner kick taken by Pepê on the right, deflected to the near post by Galeno, Samu jump above everyone else and the ball ended in Nehuén Pérez, who saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper. In front of what seemed to be an open goal, Pepê was unable to shoot for target.
Supported by a decent group of fans, the Greek team – who were able to score, but El Kaabi was offside – only managed to put Diogo Costa on alert 42 minutes in, with a shot from Masouras at the edge of the area, but the number 99 responded with a good save.
With no goals on the scoreboard in the first moments of the second half, the blue and white coach sent in Gonçalo Borges, Fábio Vieira and Zé Pedro to replace Pepê, Rodrigo Mora and João Mário, and the Dragons were playing in the opposing midfield. Still, Olympiacos were the ones reaching the lead. From a play on the left, Mouzakitis took advantage of a mistake of the blue and white defence and crossed behind to El Kaabi, who shot at the near post (1-0).
Francisco Moura and Samu were replaced by Deniz Gül and Danny Namaso, teaming up as the offensive duo with which FC Porto tried, until the final whistle, to reverse the negative result. A cross from Gonçalo Borges on the left found the Turkish international youngster, who passed to Fábio Vieira for a shot that Tzolakis saved (89m). The tie didn't come, so the first home defeat of the season was conceded. In the last round of the league phase, the Dragons are going to Belgrade - without Samu and Nehuén Pérez, banned for the number of yellows - to face the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv.
