Martín Anselmi is the fifth Argentinian coach in the history of FC Porto
This is the motto that guides the career of Martín Anselmi, the new coach of Futebol Clube do Porto, born on July 11, 1985 in Buenos Aires, a city that breathes football.
He arrives in Europe after leaving a clear mark on the teams he coached, becoming the second youngest coach to win a CONMEBOL title, at the age of 37, when he won the Copa Sudamericana for Ecuador's Independiente del Valle.
His career began in his home country at the service of Excursionistas, in 2015. The following year, he joined the technical team of Gabriel Milito's Independiente de Avellaneda and, in 2017, moved to Atlanta, where he spent two seasons as assistant coach to Francisco Berscé.
The first run outside of Argentina came in 2018, when he took over the B team of Ecuador's Universidad Católica. It was his first experience in a country that would mark his career. The following year, he arrived at Independiente del Valle, as an assistant to Miguel Ángel Ramírez, who characterized Anselmi as “hyper obsessive with the game”.
This was followed by Internacional de Porto Alegre and, shortly after, the definitive start of his career as head coach. He started in Chile, at Unión La Calera, but in May 2022 he returned to Independiente del Valle, now as the main coach. And the success was clear: he won the South American Cup and the Ecuador Cup, the club's first ever. He is, in fact, the first coach to win two titles in the same season in Independiente's history. And he repeated the feat in 2023, with the South American Cup Winners' Cup and the Ecuador Super Cup.
In 2024 he took over Cruz Azul from Mexico, taking it to a championship final and achieving the club's record for points.
To his motto of being passionate in everything he does, he adds others: the team is above all. And work is the path to success.
“Just talent is not enough to win games. Talent without work is wasted. Talent with work leads to success.”
Father of two children, a fan of discipline with empathy, Martín Anselmi has Marcelo Bielsa as his main reference.
