FC Porto lost 3-2 in the second leg of the Europa League playoff

FC Porto was defeated at the Olimpico in Rome (3-2) and was eliminated from the Europa League. Samu and an own goal from Rensch scored for the blue and whites, who will return to Portugal to prepare for the match against Vitória SC, for matchday 23 (Monday, 20h15).

Martín Anselmi sent Tiago Djaló, João Mário, Alan Varela, Eustáquio and Samu from the start and the Dragons looked to have the ball, applying pressure to free up space at the back of the Italian defence. It was from this tactical principle that Pepê, receiving from Fábio Vieira, had the first chance on goal, but ended up being disarmed by the Roman central defenders (11m).

With their opponents playing the ball out wide, the Dragons would score 27 minutes in, with a superb play by Samu. Paredes slipped and couldn't collect Svilar's pass, Eustáquio recovered on the edge of the area and, after a shot from Fábio Vieira was deflected, the Spanish international forward controlled the ball with his left foot and shot a bicycle kick into the net (0-1). AS Roma reacted to the blue and whites' lead and Paulo Dybala, 34 and 39 minutes in, turned the game around (2-1).

The Argentinian forward was once again in the spotlight at the start of the second half when, already with a yellow card, struck Otavio in the face with his arm, but no booking came out. Two minutes later, Paredes provoked Eustaquio – the Canadian midfielder's reaction got him sent off with a direct red card - with a similar gesture and was shown a yellow card by referee François Letexier.

With Gonçalo Borges (56m) and Rodrigo Mora (65m) on the pitch, Samu had an excellent chance to tie. The clock was ticking 68 minutes when Diogo Costa passed to the number 9, who, after winning a duel with Ndicka - who was putting pressure on his back with his arm – hit the post. Tomás Pérez made his debut for FC Porto, William Gomes and Danny Namaso were also brought in for the final minutes, but an accurate shot from Pisilli (3-1, 84m) sealed the match, despite FC Portos' response in the fifth minute of stoppage time (3-2). The Dragons are out of the Europa League.
