Martín Anselmi emphasised that the play between Samu and Hornicek was "a clear penalty"
Minutes after the defeat at Estádio Municipal de Braga (1-0), Martín Anselmi regretted the lack of "greater depth in the final third" and "more crosses" from his players to trouble an opponent "who defends very well" and also the lack of criteria of the refereeing team, who failed to give a penalty in favour of FC Porto close to half time for a foul by Hornicek on Samu: "Samu's play looks like a penalty to me and, if it's not a penalty, there's a lack of judgement because last week, in the SC Farense-AVS match, the same one was given. In that game it was signalled, today it wasn't. Either both are penalties or neither is. We need to standardise the criteria. I hadn't seen the footage yet, I've seen it now, Samu gets to the ball first and the goalkeeper hits him. It's either all penalties or none. It's a clear penalty".
Determined to "fight to the end", not least because "giving up is not part of the essence" of the coach and the club, the Argentinian coach pointed out that "the opposition still has to play" and that the blue and whites have nine more games to play before the end of the season.
Analysing the match
"We lacked more depth in the final third, I think SC Braga also defend very well, which is also why they don't concede many goals at home. We couldn't realise the chances we had and conceded an early goal. We lacked the depth to attack SC Braga's back five. We tried to create more danger by putting two forwards on the pitch, but we lacked that depth. It's not about shooting for the sake of shooting, it's about creating more concrete situations. We had to get more crosses in. SC Braga got in well, we managed to adjust our passing and we improved a little, but we got a bit complacent."
SC Braga's goal and Samu's being tackled by Hornicek
"We paid dearly. Martim committed an inadvertent foul and then that foul turned into a goal with the only shot they had in the first half. Samu's play looks like a penalty to me, and if it isn't a penalty, there's a lack of criteria because last week, in the SC Farense-AVS match, a similar play ended in a penalty. In that game it was signalled, today it wasn't. Either both are penalties or neither is. We need to standardise the criteria. I hadn't seen the footage yet, I've seen it now, Samu gets to the ball first and the goalkeeper hits him. It's either all penalties or none. It's a clear penalty."
The absence of creative players
"Whether we win or not, these types of players are always needed. They're players who create imbalances and that's why they're always important."
All the way
"Our opponents still have to play and so do we. We'll fight to the end, giving up isn't what I'm about. It's always been like that and it always will be, that's also the essence of the club."
