FC Porto won at Estádio de Alvalade (2-1) and is alone in the lead of the league table
FC Porto truly worthy of Porto showed up in the capital both fearless and missing key players, beating Sporting 2-1 in matchday four of a championship the Dragons now lead alone, with only victories. Luuk de Jong scored the first goal with the blue and white jersey and William Gomes scored a work of art that will be immortalised in the history of Portuguese football. Three points now separate the rivals from Porto (12) and Lisbon (9).
Facing the injuries of Martim Fernandes, Gabri Veiga, Pepê and Samu – the striker started on the bench – Francesco Farioli sent in Francisco Moura and Rodrigo Mora from the start and designed a well-studied kick-off that only failed to result in a goal because Borja Sainz's acrobatic shot hit the post after just 13 seconds.
The home team responded nine minutes in with an attempt by Luis Suárez, who was pressed by Nehuén Pérez, and, from the 20th minute onwards, there were moments of danger at both ends: first, William Gomes left Luuk de Jong in front of goal and the Dutch international shot at Rui Silva; then, after another recovery in the final third, Hjulmand deflected a shot from his countryman Victor Froholdt into a corner; finally, to stop a counterattack from the Lisbon side, who had numerical superiority, Alberto Costa sprinted from one area to the other and denied Pote of a goal.
Froholdt threatened again before half time following a throw-in that ended in a shot against the side of the net. Shortly afterwards, Mora dribbled through the home defence and shot with his left foot, but the ball went slightly over the bar. Pablo Rosario made his debut for FC Porto early in the second half, when he went in alongside Zaidu to replace Mora and Moura, and the Northern accent was heard shortly afterwards.
Zaidu, Bednarek and Nehuén built up the play, the Nigerian broke Sporting’s pressure with a pass to Varela, the Argentinian midfielder passed to Alberto Costa, the Portuguese player exchanged passes with William, crossed to the far post and Luuk de Jong only had to tap in, sending thousands of Porto fans into a celebration (0-1). But the best was yet to come...
Unsatisfied with winning by just one, the Dragons attacked without mercy. William Gomes, the most determined of them all, cut inside and scored a goal worthy of being seen and seen again: a fantastic curved shot that went in at the top corner and shook the capital (0-2).
Sporting only managed to reduce the result to 2-1 in the final quarter of an hour thanks to an unfortunate mistake by the blue and white defence that ended in an own goal by Nehuén Pérez. Meanwhile, Deniz Gül, Dominik Prpic, and Samu replaced William Gomes, Borja Sainz, and Luuk de Jong. Diogo Costa reminded everyone he was there 86 minutes in, and João Gonçalves' final whistle was heard to signal a well-deserved victory for the best team on the pitch.
