FC Porto tied with Benfica (0-0) and remains three points ahead of Sporting
FC Porto could not manage more than a 0-0 tie against Benfica in matchday 8 of a championship that the Dragons continues to lead alone with a three-point lead over Sporting (19), who also tied at home against SC Braga (1-1). Better than the rivals from Lisbon throughout the 90 minutes, Porto came close to sealing the classic in injury time, but the crossbar denied Rodrigo Mora's goal and saved Benfica from the defeat.
Francesco Farioli made nine changes in comparison to the starting team of the previous match and the first half was one-sided. Attacking northwards, the Dragons maintained possession 61% of the time, had four times as many shots, had more corners and only had a negative score in terms of fouls, doing twice as many as their opponents, who only had three fouls called against them.
Gabri Veiga came close to opening the scoreboard with a backheel 20 minutes in, Benfica had a single shot from a set piece in the 33rd minute, and Pepê had the best chance of the first half shortly afterwards - when Samu carried the ball, worked it and assisted, but the Brazilian international shot over with his left foot. Just before half time, after a combination between himself, Borja Sainz and Francisco Moura, Gabri Veiga shot at Trubin and the nill-nill remained until the break.
The second half began as the first had ended, with Gabri Veiga creating danger and Trubin keeping a clean sheet. With Pablo Rosario and William Gomes replacing the Spanish midfielder and Pepê, the visitors had their only real chance of the match, a deflection by Kiwior towards his own goal that was saved by the crossbar, and William also had a curling shot that went close before Deniz Gül replaced Samu.
92 minutes in, Rodrigo Mora, who had just come on for Alan Varela, came within inches of opening the score, but the 18-year-old prodigy's shot hit the south goalpost, saving Benfica and stealing the first points of the season from FC Porto.
