Francesco Farioli praised the “good attitude and spirit of the players” against Nottingham Forest
After “a good performance and a bad result” against “a team with a lot of individual and collective quality”, Francesco Farioli said that FC Porto “deserved more” in England and stressed that “not conceding any shots on goal other than penalties says a lot about the performance and attitude of the players on the pitch.”
“As soon as we get back to the hotel, we will focus on Monday's game, which will be difficult against one of the teams that started the season in the best way, with a lot of attention and respect for the game and the opponent”, said the Italian coach, for whom the solution to continuing the good start to the season is to “work hard”.
The positives
“It's not the result we wanted. It was a demanding game, we managed it well, we conceded two penalties and nothing else against a team with a lot of individual and collective quality. We managed the rest of the game very well, we created good chances, but we lacked precision in the final third. The players' attitude and spirit were excellent. We're going home with a result we didn't want, but we're already looking ahead to the next game.”
A better performance than the result
“We did everything we wanted to do, perhaps we lacked precision and failed to make our presence felt in the opposition's area, we conceded two penalties – I haven't seen the footage yet – and a shot from outside the area against a Premier League team with excellent individual players. We played our game, it's not the result we wanted and we deserved more.”
Praise for the squad
“They played their way, we controlled the game in terms of possession and occupying space, we were better than them in that regard. We only conceded one counter-attack against a team of this level. The first penalty came from a challenge for the ball, the second was contact in the area... coming here and not conceding any shots on goal other than the penalties says a lot about the performance and attitude of the players on the pitch.”
Focus on Moreira de Cónegos
“We're not promising anything. We are here to work hard, we have to forget this game and look to the next one, that's what I say after victories and now, after a good performance and a bad result, I say the same. From the moment we return to the hotel, we will focus on Monday's game, which will be difficult against one of the teams that started the season in the best way, with a lot of attention and respect for the game and the opponent. There's nothing else to it, we just have to work and move on.”
Samu
“He worked very well for the team in the way he pressed and when he had to link up play. We weren't as accurate with our final pass, and he also had to face two very good centre-backs. He created danger and threats, so I'm very happy with his performance and the attitude he showed.”
Lino Godinho's sending off
“My assistant was telling our players to keep playing because the Nottingham Forest player was off the pitch, so I didn't understand why he was sent off. It's better not to even mention the other bench.”
The first defeat
“I'm more concerned when we win. In football, we have to accept the results. We did everything we could, there are no regrets. Now we're going to the hotel to start analysing our next opponent, tomorrow we'll train here, travel and get back to work to continue our journey in the League. It's never a good to lose. We tried everything to keep the positive results going, but we have to turn the page and move on.”
