FC Porto tied in Utrecht for matchday 4 of the Europa League (1-1)
In a match that ended with 20 shots and 67% ball possession, FC Porto only managed to tie in Utrecht (1-1) on matchday 4 of the Europa League group stage. With this result, the blue and whites now have seven points and are 14th in the table.
Francesco Farioli made eight changes to the starting team that faced SC Braga, and four of them created the first chance at Stadion Galgenwaard: Prpić connected directly with Gül, who passed to Eustáquio, who then found Gabri Veiga unmarked behind the Dutch defence. Leaning to the left, the number 10 shot just wide of the far post (12m).
Even as visitors, FC Porto dominated the opening half - as evidenced by their 69% possession at the half-hour mark - and could have gone into the break ahead given the high volume of attacking play they created. Borja Sainz rounded the goalkeeper but did not have the necessary angle to aim for goal (17m), Deniz Gül shot hard, but straight at Barkas (19m), Gabri was again unlucky in the 35th minute, and Eustáquio, served by Pepê after a high recovery in the final moments, allowed the shot to be deflected, ending up in the goalkeeper's hands. The hosts only gave a warning in the 44th minute, and the score remained nil-nil at half time.
On their return, FC Utrecht took the lead through a well-worked free kick that ended in a shot from Miguel Rodríguez deflected by Prpić (1-0, 48m), and Francesco Farioli made a change shortly afterwards. William Gomes went in for Pepê, won a foul in the final third and took a set piece into the box, which ended with the opposing goalkeeper bringing down Pablo Rosario (55m). The blue and white bench protested immediately and, after the ball was put out of play, referee John Beaton decided to continue the match.
The first sign of reward after so much dominance came in the 65th minute, when Gabri Veiga recovered the ball in the opposition's midfield and drove forward to pass to Deniz Gül, who aimed for the far post and forced the goalkeeper into a great save, but the ball fell to Borja Sainz, who tapped in and celebrated for the second game in a row. Because a tie is never enough for FC Porto, Gabri Veiga went to retrieve the ball to continue the game and ended up being fouled by Barkas, who was shown a direct red card.
Alberto Costa and Victor Froholdt replaced Eustáquio and Martim Fernandes, the number 10 created danger again with a powerful shot on the half-turn (76m), Deniz Gül was replaced by Samu and goalkeeper Michael Brouwer - the substitute who took over in goal after Barkas' sending off - denied Borja Sainz in the last five minutes, as well as Prpić in the fourth minute of added time.
